The Many Odd Origins of EVEN STEVEN

Created by Karl Kesel

You missed the EVEN STEVEN Kickstarter? That's just NOT FAIR! Luckily, you can still get all your EVEN STEVEN (and IMPOSSIBLE JONES) stuff right here!

Latest Updates from Our Project:

LO! Let the Fulfillment be… FINISHED!
28 days ago – Wed, Apr 08, 2026 at 01:21:21 PM

THIS WAS THE SCENE THIS MORNING…

…inside the PANIC ROOM— the cutting-edge Fulfillment Center for Panic Button Press. (A.K.A: my basement.) These are the last 15 EVEN STEVEN packages— and they were mailed out less than an hour later!

That means the only EVEN STEVEN books still to go out are 15 LOCAL PICK-UPS! (See the two stacks at the right side of the table? Those are the Local Pick-Ups.) I will be reaching out to anyone with a Local Pick-Up in the next few days to arrange a time and place for the hand-off.

(You can reach out to me first, if you'd like. Message me and we'll work out a rendevous— most likely on an evening or weekend.)

(Also please reach out to me if you have not received a tracking number for your package. Except for the Local Pick-Ups, all other packages should have been delivered or are on their way right now. If for any reason yours isn't, I want to know that and fix it ASAP.)

EVEN STEVEN has been a joy to put together, from the first word written to the last mailing label attached. THANK YOU for supporting this book in particular, and indie creators in general. (I can safely say that those of us who do this indie-comics thing can use all the help we can get… in more ways than one!) As I always say: We make the comics, but YOU make the comics POSSIBLE.

Now it's time for me to catch my breath… and then dive right back in! "What's next for you, Karl?" I hear you ask— and I'm truly touched by your deep and sincere interest.

Alright, since you asked so nicely. Two words: IMPOSSIBLE and JONES.

But not like you'd expect. Something a little different. Better? Hopefully. Me, I'm sure it'll be a SENSATION!

LO! IT BEGINS!

FULFILLMENT, that is.

Look what arrived on my doorstep early on the morning of March 10th:

Ladies and gentlemen: 45 boxes of EVEN STEVEN books! With each box weighing 14.9 kg, that's a total of 1478.1995 pounds! All of which I moved (with the invaluable help of our loyal hand-truck) up the driveway, into the backyard, and finally down into the PANIC ROOM, located somewhere in the shadowy, secret labyrinths beneath our home… where fulfillment magic happens!

And Then— THE MOMENT OF TRUTH!

I opened the first box…

…and beheld a thing of unparalleled beauty!

OK— maybe I'm biased. But it really is a handsome, wonderfully printed book. A fine and worthy addition to any bookshelf— especially yours!

>Sigh.<

So… What's next?

I have some last touch-ups to do on the Sketch inks, then need to scan them all before I send them out. That will probably take most of the morning.

I'll then lock all the addresses. If you've recently moved, please make sure I have your correct address.

IF YOU HAVEN'T FILLED OUT YOUR BACKERKIT SURVEY— PLEASE DO IT NOW!

According to BackerKit, there are still 35 UNANSWERED SURVEYS. If you answer yours before I assemble the database, you'll get your book pretty soon. If you don't, your order will go out after the already-answered surveys in the database. That's just the most efficient way to do it. Sad but true.

If you're unsure if you filled out your survey— message me and I'll tell you. Better safe than sorry, right?

It'll probably be early on the 12th before I print out the final database, with everyone listed with everything they'll get. So you have some time to get your ducks in a row, if you need to.

It's possible I'll send out the first batch of books on Friday, the 13th(!!!) or Saturday the 14th. At the very latest, the first wave will go into the mail on Monday the 16th.

Get ready. You're gonna love this!

March Update
2 months ago – Mon, Mar 02, 2026 at 08:09:39 AM

SO…

Apparently, the EVEN STEVEN books are stuck in a port somewhere in America, waiting to go through customs. And they've been there a few weeks. I am told I will be notified as soon as they clear customs, but so far: nada.

BUT…

On the bright side, the fine folks at Colorhaus have delivered, as always, our many fine etxras earned through sundry and various stretch goals and creative whims:

An endlessly entertaining assembly of EVEN STEVEN ephemera!

AND…

The fully-signed BOOKPLATES and David's penciled SKETCHES should be arrtiving at Panic Central (my house) today or tomorrow. At which point I'll start inkin' 'em up! (The Sketches, that is.)

Sorry for this delay— I had expected to start fulfillment in February, but with any luck everything will be delivered and done and ready to send out at about the same time.

Stay tuned…

Shipping Starts Next Week!
3 months ago – Wed, Feb 11, 2026 at 09:17:11 AM

Assuming the EVEN STEVEN books arrive on/around February 20th, as they're supposed to. (And no one's told me they won't.)

So, in anticipation of that momentus event, I've been gathering the sundry swag that goes out with all (or some) of the books, such as these SIGNED BOOKPLATES

I've now done my share of defacing them, and they should be in David's hands on Thurday, February 12th. At which point he'll sign them, and send them back to me, along with his always-spectacular Sketches.

With fulfillment pending, it's now time for me to charge your credit card for postage and any extra items you may have added to your inital order. I'm not feeling tip-top today— scratchy throat, tired— so I won't do that until the 12th or 13th. If for any reason the charge doesn't go through, you will still have a full week to straighten things out.

The good news is: once your card is successfully charged the DIGITAL version of EVEN STEVEN and assorted extras will become instantly available! (And if you only got the digital version of the book with no new add-ons or charges, it will be downloadable for you at that point, too.)

Okay. Onward!

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!

FEBRUARY 20, 2026

That's the date I was just given by Sam at PrintLore as the estimated at-my-door delivery date for the EVEN STEVEN books. They are already printed, and are probably on the proverbial (but surprisingly accurate) slow boat from China as I write this.

Meaning I will start shipping on February 21st. God willing and the creek don't rise.

Not much more to report. So while we're waiting for this modern masterpiece to arrive on all our doorsteps, may I suggest a few other book currently on Kickstarter that I think are well worth your support?

I usually like to focus on one title per update, just so no one gets lost in the mix, but there are SO MANY good books on Kickstarter right now, I have to break that rule. (More of a guideline, really.)

WHITE ASH

Charlie Stickney and Conor Hughes' WHITE ASH is the cornerstone of Kickstarter comics. And with good reason. It was there when I did my first Kickstarter, it's still here, and Charlie and Conor (and a few others) are still making AMAZING comics.

What's it about? Just your typical small, Pennsylvania mining town populated by dwarves and elves, fighting to save the world from impending darkness. Big Bad Evil, sexy elf warriors, sturdy dwarf fighters. Charlie keeps this show running with the precision of a Swiss watch (or Swiss army knife, considering the blood that's spilled!) while Conor's art just keeps getting better and better.

It's one of the best comics produced by anyone, anywhere. Trust me on this.

TREKKER

Ron Randall is a friend of mine, but that doesn't change the fact that his TREKKER is one of the most epic sci-fi comics out there, filled with wonderfully realized characters and heart-stopping action.

What's it about? A 23rd century bounty hunter who gets pulled into a much bigger, more dangerous world of war and rebellion where she questions her government, herself, and what's really important to her. And in case reality has unfortunately made that a little too for comfort, there's also space-ships and rayguns. Pew-Pew!

I've read this book already, and the ending brought a tear to my eye. Seriously. That's how good Ron is at this comics thing. Damn him.

BIXBY GRANT

Writer Patrick Coyle, artist Gonzalo Martinez and colorist Arthur Hesli are the twisted masterminds behind this endlessly enjoyable comic. This book hasn't launched yet but I, for one, can't wait and STRONGLY suggest you sign up on the PRE-LAUNCH PAGE— NOW!

What's it about? A 1930s private eye gets turned into an immortal mummy. Now living in the present day (but still speaking like a mook what just stepped out of The Maltese Falcon) he deals with vampires and werewolves and zombies and more in the supernaturally-saturated Harbor City. Sort of a pulpy, noir-ish HELLBOY crossed with Sam Spade.

I can't tell you how much I love this book. I want to make comics just like it when I grow up.

Get in on the Pre-Launch rumpus for BIXBY GRANT HERE.

Okay, I'm sure I've bored and bothered you enough by now. Go have a life…
